What have we been learning in Reception?

September 22, 2017 at 10:25 am

This week in phonics, the children have learnt the first four phonemes. We use cursive script when forming letters and this week’s phonemes are formed in this way:

We have put a letter formation sheet in the children’s bookbags today so you can see how we teach children to form letters. All the letters start at the bottom left hand corner as you can see above.

As part of phonics, the children have found objects that begin with the letter of the day and have also practised forming the letters. They have listened to stories that have the letter of the day in the title, for example, ‘Peter Puffin’ when we were learning /p/. The children have also eaten foods beginning with the letter. They had strawberries, apples, tomatoes and pita bread.

The video below is a song that shows you the correct pronunciation and actions for each phoneme. This is a very catchy song and the children love singing along.

We have also started to blend phonemes together to make words using the phonemes taught, for example sat and pat. We start off by slowly saying the phonemes in sequence. Then we say them quicker and quicker until the sounds come together to form a word.

The children will come home with a Reading Record in their bookbags today. In the book will be the first set of key words for the children to learn which are the ‘lilac’ key words. There will also be a game for you to play with your child to help them learn the words. The children need to begin to learn to read these words by sight.

Every child will also be given a book to share with you. These books have no words in therefore the focus is for the children to practise turning the pages of the book and to use the pictures to try and tell a story to you. Please keep the books in the children’s bookbags so we can change them next week.

The children will all come home with a school library book today. Please bring this book back every Friday so the children can choose another book.

We have been mastering an understanding of the numbers 1-4 this week. The children have counted objects, practised forming the number and represented the number by drawing pictures.

Welcome to Reception

September 15, 2017 at 3:11 pm

We now have two full Reception classes and we  have really enjoyed getting to know all the children over the last two weeks. The children seem to have settled well into their new routines and have been exploring their new classrooms with great excitement. Here are some pictures of the children playing…

Key Information

-The school doors open at 8.50 in the morning and 3.15 in the afternoon. If the children aren’t in school by 9.00, you will have to sign them in at the School Office and they will be given a late mark on the register. It is really important that the children come to school on time otherwise they will miss Phonics lessons which begin at 9.05.

-P.E. is on Fridays. Please ensure your child has a pair of shorts and a white t-shirt to change into.

-The children have lots of jobs to complete when they enter the classroom in the morning. They’re to register themselves by putting their name in a basket, answer the ‘Question of the Day’, write their name on a sticky label to put on their fruit and then put their fruit in their tray. The children have been doing really well with their morning jobs so far.

We hope you have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you all again on Monday.

Starting Nursery

September 13, 2017 at 9:30 am

Most of the children have started now and are settling in well. They are beginning to make new friends and experience new things. At this early stage our aim is to ensure all the children are happy and settled. The Nursery team are available to discuss any concerns you may have.

All of the children will be able to choose a library book to take home. Library books are changed on a Wednesday. The children will be able to put their new library book in a new school book bag. Please ensure you look after the book bag as there will be a charge to replace it. If your child doesn’t attend Nursery on a Wednesday then please bring their book bags in on one of the days they do attend.

Please can you make sure your child wears clothing which they can easily pull down in order to go to the toilet independently. Jogging bottoms are ideal.

Named clothing!
Please can I remind parents of the importance of naming your child’s clothing. We have already had some clothing going home with the wrong child. We cannot express the importance of having names in jackets, coats and jumpers.

Infant Building Car Park
The Infant Building car park is for staff or parents with permission only. Please use adjoining streets when parking to pick your child up.

If you have any reason to contact the Nursery staff the direct line number is 0113 205 8136 or email us at [email protected]

Thank you,
From the Nursery team

P.S. Photos to follow!

Seaside Day in Reception

July 19, 2017 at 3:13 pm

We have had a wonderful Seaside Day in Reception. We spent the morning preparing by making signs and writing lists of things we needed.

We then enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon and had a lovely picnic with our grown ups.

Thank you for all the food donations which made for a lovely picnic this afternoon and thank you to all those that were able to attend.

St Leonard’s Farm

July 13, 2017 at 4:20 pm

Today the Nursery children had a fantastic day at the farm. We had beautiful weather, an opportunity to hold/stroke animals, feed them, a picnic lunch and play with our friends. Judging by how quiet the minibuses were on the way home, I think they had an exhausting day!!

A huge thank you to all the parents who volunteered; we really couldn’t have done the trip without you!!

Sleep well tonight, I know we will!
