Yet another busy week!

This week in Maths the children have been continuing to learn about 3D shapes and have been on a hunt around the classroom for cylinders, cubes and cuboids.  They have also been using 10 frames to solve addition and subtraction problems. They were very good at working out whether they had to add or subtract to work out the problem. Well done everyone!

We have been practising some Phase 3 sounds and writing sentences with words containing ‘ai, ‘ee’ and ‘igh’. Some children were able to write their sentences independently.

One of the focus children this week used the camera to take pictures herself at home so we asked her if she would like to take some photographs in school and what she could use to take them. Someone suggested we use iPads. Most of the children were not sure how to use the iPads to take pictures so they learned which App to use and how to take the photo. Then they were shown how to view the photos and if they did not like them how to delete them. This was very popular with everyone.

Other children have been busy researching and making volcanoes, building tree houses and painting rainbows. What varied interests and imaginations the children have.

After a very busy week with Ofsted and two Parent’s Evenings, last night we finally had our twice postponed Pyjama Story Night. During the day the children made posters and cookies to have with hot chocolate. They were very excited and many returned to school later in the evening dressed in their pyjamas to listen to a variety of stories. It was a very lovely evening and the children thoroughly enjoyed it. What a lovely way to end the day and I know that for lots of the children listening to stories at bedtime is part of their usual routine. I hope that more families will make this lovely experience part of their bedtime routine from now on, it’s a very good way of settling the children down for a good night’s sleep.

Next week we will be learning one new sound ‘ear’ and continuing to revise all the Phase 2 and Phase 3 sounds we have covered so far. In Maths we will be doing some problem solving and assessing of number recognition and ordering.

A bit of everything in RF!

This week we have been very busy with lots of different things.

Some children planned a party and made cakes. They wrote invitations and thought of all the things they would like at a party. At the end of the week we all shared the cake!

One child is soon going on an aeroplane for the first time so we have been finding out what it is like on a plane and the children set up their own plane.

Other children have visited the farm and enjoyed feeding the chickens and collecting eggs. On the way back to class it was so wet they all had fun splashing in puddles.

3D shapes have been the focus of our Maths this week and all the children joined in making one big model. They each had a 3D shape and we talked about the name and properties of the shape. Then the children carefully built a model. They had lots of problem solving to do because if they did not place their box in the right position or make sure it was balanced then disaster struck and it collapsed. When it was completed we had lots of suggestions of what it could be. Some children said it looked like a castle and others thought it resembled a mosque.

Next week we will continue to learn about 3D shapes and use familiar objects and common shapes to create and recreate patterns.

This week in Phonics we have been revising ch, sh, th and ng in words. The children have written words and sentences with these sounds in them. Next week we will be revising ai, ee and igh. The children will be writing words and sentences both independently and with support.

A caring week in Nursery

Well last week snow, this week rain with more snow coming – we thought it was Spring!

This week the children have been thinking about one of their friends who has been in hospital for 2 weeks. They thought about what they could do to cheer him up. First they sent video messages sending their good wishes or asking questions and then they all contributed to a card. It was great to see how well the children did drawing on a small piece of paper.

The children have shown great interest in using an art programme on the interactive whiteboard. They have used their fingers and pens to write numbers,  letters and names and draw pictures. Some children remembered how to get a clear screen. During using the whiteboard the children saw their shadows and created their own shapes using their hands.

In our phonic sessions we have been making some rhyming soup. We have practised saying the rhyme:

“I’m making lots of silly soup, I’m making soup that’s silly, I’m going to cook it in the fridge, to make it nice and chilly”

The children then have to find 2 pictures or objects that rhyme (sound the same), like log and dog, cat and hat. We also read the book ‘Oi Dog!’ which is a super rhyming story. It is something the children found quite challenging, so we will continue to practise.

In our number work we continue to practise counting forward to 20 and back from 10. We have also started to look at accurately counting objects or claps or jumps. We have started to represent the number 2 by drawing 2 pictures, 2 lines, 2 circles or writing the number 2.

Our story this week has been linked to the upcoming celebration of St Patrick’s Day. The children listened to story as well as learn about where Ireland is. Ask your child if they can tell you something about the story below…

Even though the weather has been very wet the children have enjoyed exploring the outdoor area especially the mud and puddles. We do have limited waterproofs for the children, so if you have any waterproof suits, trousers or jackets you no longer need we would be able to use them!

Some children enjoyed using crazy soap and seeing how it felt. They were amazed you could make shapes with it! Lots of learning and playing, particularly making dens…

Parents’ evening

Don’t forget parents’ evening is next Tuesday and Wednesday. If you haven’t already made an appointment then please do so. We are taking appointments outside of these days, so we can offer some flexibility.

Mathematicians in RF!

Well it has been a funny week! The children have had a productive 3 days of learning!

In our phonic work we have been practising spelling and reading the tricky words I, no, go, to and the. I challenged the children to try and spell the words when they were covered and with their eyes shut! The aim was for them to be able to visualise the shapes of the words which should help them to remember how to spell the words. We have also been reading words which have the diagraphs ‘ch and ng’ in them – the children needed to work out whether or not they were real words or made up ones.

In mathematics we having been continuing to develop the children’s knowledge of subtraction. We have been using a number track as well as our fingers and objects to calculate subtractions. The children have a good understanding that there are many different words to use when subtracting – minus, subtract and take away. Some children enjoyed playing number bingo.

As part of our World Maths Day we read the book ‘How big is a million?’ It is about a penguin called Pipkin who wants to know what a million looks like so he goes in search to find out.

We challenged the children to see if they could represent a million on paper! They found different ways to draw what they thought a million would look like. We discussed that although they had drawn a lot of pictures that perhaps we weren’t quite near a million!

The children have also been busy creating dinosaur worlds, reading, writing in their Busy Bee books, exploring outside, solving subtraction calculations, making special Mother’s Day cards and developing their imaginative play.

Parents evening

Thank you to those parents who have returned their parents evening forms. If you haven’t done so already please return them. It is important we see all the parents so we can discuss your child’s progress and their next steps in learning. There are currently some spaces before 5.30pm on Tuesday and a few spaces on Wednesday between 3.50 and 5.15pm. If you are unable to attend these days or get an appointment then please let us know and we can arrange to see you another time.

A short but busy week in Nursery!

We have had another busy 3 days in Nursery, from baking to lots of counting!

The children have been putting their artistic skills to the test when making their Mother’s Day cards. They selected their own resources – paint, sponges, tissues paper, coloured paper, coloured sticks to create their cards. Inside the cards they have tried really hard to sign their names. We hope you like them!

In our phonic work we continue to practise blending 3 sounds together to hear the word, by singing our song about Jack and Jill. The children are getting really good at sounding out words such as f-o-x, p-e-g, r-e-d and being able to hear the words the sounds make. We will start challenging them further next week by saying a word like fox and seeing if they can break the word up in to 3 sounds f-o-x.

The children listened to the story ‘Who’s Bad and Who’s Good, Little Red Riding Hood?’ It is based on the traditional tale of Little Red Riding Hood and it addresses the importance of not talking to people we don’t know – stranger danger.

We have also introduced the children to story writing. The idea is that children verbally tell a story to an adult like an author and then at the end of the session we bring the story alive by acting it out. To begin with the grown ups have been writing the stories to support the children with possible ideas. We hope in the next few weeks we will have some budding authors!

In mathematics we having been finding out what our favourite fruit is. The choice of fruits were apple, strawberry, orange and banana. The children had to count how popular each fruit was and see which was the most and least popular. We explained that the smaller number meant less people liked that fruit. I’m sure a few them voted more than once! We also practised rolling a dice, counting the dots and jumping, clapping or hopping the correct number of times.

In the story Pipkin finds 10 fish, the children were able to show me 10 fingers. When asked how big do you think a million is? Some of the responses were:

“This big (arms opened as wide as they can go”

“It’s not as much as infinity”

Pipkin goes on to find a 100 penguins. “Do you know anyone who is a 100 years old?” we asked. Some children did. We decided to find out how old the oldest person in the world is – 117! The children were challenged to find lots of number cards hidden around the classroom. Their job was to find them and count how many objects they could see. They did well to count from 1 up to 20.

The children have also been busy baking, listening to stories and dancing to music…

World Maths Day

The children were very excited about World Maths Day on Wednesday.

We gathered the children’s ideas together about what they wanted to do. I was really impressed by the amount of language the children associated with maths.
