All the B’s in Nursery

January 18, 2019 at 3:50 pm

Baking, bikes and bubbles! This week lots of our activities seem to have started with the letter ‘b’ which is just coincidence.

Baking….

We tried a new recipe this week as we have children with allergies to eggs. It involved lots of mixing but was still a success.

Bikes…

At the beginning of the week some of our children had a training session on balance bikes. We were lucky enough to be left with several bikes for the children to practice on. They are becoming much more confident as you can see.

Bubbles…

In our finger gym area we have had bubble wrap for the children to develop the muscle strength in the hands. This was very popular and we have run out of bubble wrap so if you have any at home we would be grateful for donations.

Other things this week…

Next week we will be having fun with dough and doing lots of ‘Disco Dough’ activities so ask you child about what they have been doing next week.

Have a good weekend, from the Nursey team.

No January Blues in RH

January 18, 2019 at 1:01 pm

3

We couldn’t get through January without having a party in RH!

A few children helped to organise a ‘pyjama and pizza’ party this week. We had a lovely afternoon eating pizza, reading stories, looking at books and retelling stories. We even wrote our own story as a class:

The Three Little Pigs

Once upon a time there were three little pigs. One day, the wolf came. The wolf huffed and puffed and blew the pigs’ house down. The three little pigs got some wood because they needed to build a new house that was stronger. The wolf blew it down again. The three little pigs made a house out of bricks to make it even stronger. The wolf tried to blow it down but it wouldn’t blow down. He huffed and puffed so much that he fell in a pond.

The End

William has also designed a new ‘ice making’ area in the classroom. The children haven enjoyed making ice this week.

Maths

This week in maths, we have continued working with numbers 1-10. We have ordered the numbers; looked at the numbers that come before and after the numbers; and we have looked at how to represent the numbers.

Here are some posters we made:

Literacy

In literacy, we have introduced the tricky word ‘into’. Some children recognised the ‘to’ in the word which helped when trying to read it.

We have also learnt the phonemes /z/ and /zz/.

This week we have introduced a ‘word of the week’. The word this week was ‘rich’. We have talked about the different meanings of the word and tried to use it in a sentence.

Have a great weekend.

A super busy week in RK!!

January 17, 2019 at 4:20 pm

7

This week we have been learning lots of new things. We have introduced the ‘word of the week’. This is a word we think the children may not have heard, heard but not sure what it means or a word that they can explain. This week’s word is ‘camouflage’. Some children were aware of what the word meant and were able to explain it to the class. We hope that by the end of the week the children are all able to have a go at explaining what our word is.

Reading

The children have changed their reading books and some children have read this week. Please can you spend some time at home learning the ‘pink’ tricky key words by playing the caterpillar game? The words to focus on are: you, my, was, said, we. We would also encourage you to look for any labelled ‘home reading books’. We still seem short of a few titles.

Number crafts

We have a super display of numbers where the children have chosen a number and recorded 4 facts they know about that number. Please take time to have a look as they have spent a lot of time finishing this activity.

Maths learning

Maths this week has involved a lot of team work! The children worked together to complete a number puzzle. In groups of 4 they demonstrated all the ways they could show the 2 numbers they were given. Great work!

Balance bikes and outdoor play

As you may have seen from a previous post some children had the opportunity to complete some balance bike training. For those that didn’t have the chance the adults in Foundation Stage have continued this training. Some children were challenged to ride balance bikes around the track in the Key Stage 2 playground. They mastered using their brakes and manoeuvring around others!

The frosty weather today got some children interested in ice and salt. We set up an experiment to see if we could freeze objects in one of our water trays. We wrote signs to make sure nobody moved it! The children found ice in lots of different places, we even found the gravel stones stuck in ice. We talked about how salt helps the ice to melt and not make paths slippy. We looked around the school grounds to see where Mr Wilson had gritted. The children were keen to meet him so he came in to our classroom and the children asked him questions about what else he did around school.

Starting times

We would like to inform you that we will be starting the children’s learning at 9 o’clock promptly. We would appreciate it if your child could arrive before this time so they are ready to join in.

The rest of the week involved…

Have a great weekend, wrap up warm.

RK team.

Reception learning this week!

January 17, 2019 at 1:43 pm

12

Reception’s learning this week has seen the children learn z, zz in phonics and practise counting objects, ordering numbers, learning what a tally is and explaining what they know about the numbers to 10 in Mathematics.

Phonics

In phonics the children were delighted to have almost finished the alphabet sounds and names. This week we focused on z and zz. They hopefully understand that zz is usually found at the end of a word.

The children are practising forming a cursive z correctly. Knowing where to start and finish the letter. (We have a lot who are writing it back to front).

We have also learnt the tricky word ‘into’. The children have put this word into a sentence and practised spelling the word. They continue to revise the other tricky words I, to, the, go, no.

Mathematics

In maths we have been ordering numbers to 20 and practising counting objects accurately. We have been working on matching objects we have counted to the correct number. We have also explored what we know about the numbers to 10. For example:

5 = *****       1+4       3+2       5+0

The children were introduced to the word ‘tally’. They are beginning to recognise that a tally is made up of groups of ‘sticks/lines’.

Balance bike training fun!

January 15, 2019 at 8:06 am

12

On Monday Foundation Stage children had the benefit of some balance bike training. A group of children were selected from across RH, RK and Nursery and Chris Armstrong from BeCycling came to support the children’s learning on how to use a balance bike. By the end of each session the children were able to sit on the seat, move the bike using giant steps and move fast enough to do ‘Superman legs’. The children’s confidence definitely improved over the session. Chris has kindly loaned us 10 balance bikes and helmets for us to use until April.

A new year in Nursery

Happy New Year!

The children seem to have had a good rest over the last two weeks as they have returned very refreshed and keen to be busy.

We have set up a new role play area which has excited the children. The Winter Wonderland area has been very popular and has sparked lots of imagination. We often assume that children understand most of the words and concepts we use in everyday speech but sometimes they may not have that knowledge. We have been talking about the words ‘winter’ and ‘cold’ and children have explained their meanings. We used the computer to find images which explain these words and made two posters which are displayed in the winter area.

The children enjoyed painting winter trees to display…

They experienced ice…

And had fun with wintery things…

Other things this week…

And making a real cake…

What a busy week!

Have a good weekend from the Nursery team.
