A busy week in Reception!

November 26, 2021 at 4:05 pm

Maths

We have been busy during our maths sessions, this week. We have learned all about the number 5 and we have looked at 1 more. We have used lots of different resources to model and show 1 more and the children are beginning to say what 1 more is without recounting. Super maths this week.

Phonics

During our phonics sessions, we are really focusing on the tricky words we have learned so far. The children are beginning to recognise them in writing and have started to form some of the letter shapes that make them. We have looked at the phonemes for ‘l’ and ‘ll’ this week.

A touch of Italy

This week we have been learning about all things Italian. We have looked at Italy on a map and coloured the Italian flag. The children have learned some interesting facts, had a go at speaking the language, and tasted some Italian cake! We also discussed healthy eating and that cakes are just to be eaten as a treat.

All things cold

On Monday morning lots of children were very excited about the frost they had seen on their way to school. We talked about what frost is and where the children had seen frost: on car windows, on the grass, on the path. Everybody wanted to share and the children listened very well to each other. We learnt about how animals spend the winter. During the week, we read lots of winter related stories, made frosty pictures, coloured in snowflakes, and had snow and arctic animals in our water tray.

Everything else

Can we please remind parents and carers that reading records should be brought into school each day as we cannot guarantee which day your child will be read with. Can you also remember to bring homework books in on a Thursday, for marking, and library books on a Friday. Thank you.

Have a lovely weekend.

Disco Dough

This week the children have been joining in with ‘Dough Disco’. This activity involves them manipulating the playdough to strengthen their fingers. They also have to concentrate to follow the instructions. It supports the children to develop an awareness of the different parts of their bodies. This is a pre-writing activity as it develops fine motor skills. If you would like to have a go at home here is the link…

If you would like to make playdough at home the recipe is…

2 cups of plain flour

1 cup of salt

2 tablespoons of oil

2-3 teaspoons of cream of tartar

2 cups of boiling water

food colouring

optional food flavouring to add smell

Write Dance

Here is another ‘Write Dance’ activity the children have been enjoying. This helps to develop their gross motor skills and co-ordination.

Inside fun…

The children have once again been busy inside. The children enjoyed mark making, painting, dancing and building. They have completed ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’ jigsaws and so much more…

Outside fun…

The weather has turned much colder this week but we have still accessed the outdoor provision. Lots of children are now able to put their coats on without support. Please continue to support them to practice this at home. The next stage is for them to fasten their coats themselves and some children can do this already. Please remember to send them in appropriate clothing for the cold weather and make sure hats and gloves are named. Have a look a few of the things they have been doing outside…

Phonics

This week we have revisited the tricky words we have learned so far (I, go, no, to, and the). We have also looked at two new phonemes. We have focused on ‘f’ and ‘ff’. We are now looking at each phoneme over two days so that we can concentrate on reading for a day and writing for a day. The children are really impressing us with their phonics knowledge.

Maths

During our maths sessions, we have been looking at shapes and positional language. The children have focused on circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles. We have played ‘guess the shape’ and created some fantastic shape pictures in our creative areas.

Shape hunt

The children have really enjoyed learning about the different shapes in maths. We decided to take the learning outside and go on a shape hunt. It was lovely to see so many children engaged and able to tell a grown-up everything they have learned about shape. Well done Reception.

Toy Story

This week we have focused on the characters from Toy Story. We have made masks, cut out characters to create puppets for a puppet show, and used shapes to make rocket pictures. The children have also looked into space and enjoyed watching and singing along to the planet song.

Worms!

A child told the class all about the worms he had found in his garden. We decided to investigate the school ground to see if we could find some too. We found plenty! We made a ‘Worm World’ and now have some class pets! The children have enjoyed learning all about worms.

RE – What makes a good helper?

This week we have been learning about what makes a good helper. We have focused on sharing and taking turns, thinking about how we should treat others.

PE

This week we have taken our maths sessions into the hall. The children enjoyed reading the story ‘We are Going on a Bear Hunt’ while thinking about the different positions. We continued using our mathematical language during PE. We had a go at moving in different ways; over, under, next to, etc.

Everything else

Have a lovely weekend.

Nursery Rhymes in Nursery

November 19, 2021 at 1:38 pm

This week is World Nursery Rhyme Week. We always sing or recite Nursery Rhymes but this week we have been learning some new ones. Here is a very old traditional rhyme about 3 blind mice…

And another one about a teapot…

This week we have been learning about another word, ’empty’. We use this word quite often in Nursery when the children have their milk and we ask if their carton is empty. Please reinforce this vocabulary at home in all the different situations.

The children have once again been very busy. Have a look at a selection of the things they have been doing…

EExAT

EExAT is our observational and assessment tool. You will have received a letter with a code allowing you to register but if you haven’t managed to set this up yet please let us know. You will not receive alerts from us when an observation has been posted but will need to set this up yourselves. You will be able to add observations for your child. A big thank to those parents who have already put lovely observations on for their child. You can also comment on the observations we put on. Just a reminder that with the new Statutory Guidance for the Foundation Stage there is less emphasis on paperwork (or digital) and more on adults working and interacting with the children. We feel that we already know the children really well and the children are benefitting from this way of working.

A big thank you for all the lovely comments about our blog. We really enjoy showcasing what we do in Nursery.

Have a lovely weekend from the Nursery team.

Phonics

During our phonics sessions, we have been looking at the tricky word ‘go’. We have also looked at the phonemes and letter names for: r, h and b. The children have continued to practise forming the letter shapes

Maths

We have focused on the number 3 and the number 4 this week. The children have been gaining a deeper understanding of each number and had lots of practise at representing each number in different ways. We have even told our own number stories.

Superheroes

One of our interests, this week, has been all things Superhero related! The children have made puppets and told stories, completed superhero challenges, and even become a superhero!

The beach!

This week the children have been interested to learn about visiting the beach. We have investigated what we will find if we visit the beach and we have learned all about the different creatures you might find in the sea. The children have had lots of fun creating our very own beach area and getting messy playing in it!

Pirates are us, again!

RPK still love pirates! This week, the children had another secret message from the pirates. They went on a treasure hunt and practised their phonics skills when reading the words on the coins. They also used their model-making skills and created some of their own props to role play with.

Everything else!

Have a lovely weekend.

This week in Nursery

November 12, 2021 at 1:36 pm

This week we have been reading the story ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen. Lots of the children have been telling us that they have this story at home and have really enjoyed talking about what happens. We have also been acting out some parts of the story such as walking through the grass, river and mud in Nursery. We have been encouraging the children to use a wider range of vocabulary and talking about the word ‘beautiful’ which is used in this story. The children helped to find pictures on the computer of things they think are beautiful. We also talked about different words which may mean the same or similar. Can you support your child’s vocabulary development and understanding by using these words in context at home?

In Nursery we concentrate on Phase 1 phonics. There are seven aspects of this phase –

General sound discrimination – environmental sounds

General sounds – instrumental sounds

General sounds – body percussion

Rhythm and rhyme

Alliteration

Voice sounds

Oral blending and segmenting

Here is a listening game we have been playing in Nursery. It comes under the ‘environmental sounds’ aspect. Have a go at home to see if your child can identify all the sounds!

We have also been practising our number rhymes. One that the children really enjoy is ‘1, 2, 3, 4, 5 once I caught a fish alive’. When we sing this rhyme we encourage the children to put up one more finger each time they say a number. This helps them to learn the value of the number and begin to subitize, that is recognise an amount up to 5 without counting. Click on the link to have a go at home.

This week some children have been finishing their Diyas lights. They enjoyed painting them with pearlised paints…

There are lots of different celebrations at this time of year. Some children have been celebrating Bonfire Night and making Catherine Wheels and firework pictures…

Some children asked if they could visit the woodland area again. They enjoyed exploring, climbing, swinging and searching for frogs in the pond…

There has been lots of child-led learning going on in Nursery as well as all these exciting things…

What a busy week we have had!

Welcome back to the second half of the Autumn term. The children have come back refreshed and ready to learn.

This half term we will be learning some new nursery and numbers rhymes. Have a go at home to support your child’s learning…

The weather has definitely turned autumnal and the children need to be dressed appropriately for playing outside. Please support you child to learn to put their coat on independently. This week all the children have had their individual and sibling photographs taken. They had to take their shoes and socks off and then put then back on. Most of the children were able to manage this. Have a look at the pictures of how they got on…

Some of the children wanted to visit our woodland area again this week…

As you can see the children had lots of fun in the autumnal outdoors. We have been doing other things this week related to Autumn and Halloween. It is a very busy time at the moment for different celebrations. Here are some of the things the children have been experiencing…

Some of our children have been celebrating Diwali this week. All the children had the opportunity to make Diwali cards and Diyas (Diva lamps). We watched a clip telling us all about what happens for children celebrating Diwali. You may want to share this with your child at home to see what celebrations their friends have been having.

There have been lots of other things going on this week…

Welcome back Reception – 01.11.2021

November 5, 2021 at 2:42 pm

Phonics

This week we have been looking at the tricky word ‘the’. We have also introduced the children to a digraph ‘ck’ and discussed that a digraph is two letters that make one sound. We have also looked at the letter names and sounds for: ‘e’ and ‘u’. The children have practised reading/spotting these phonemes and writing them using the cursive font.

Maths

In Maths this week we have focused on numbers 1 and 2. The children have represented these numbers in different ways. They have used numicon, dice patterns, 5 frames, objects and pictures. The children have also explored different ways of making 1 and 2. The have found out that 1 and 1 makes 2 and 2 and 0 also makes 2.

Diwali

This week we have been discussing different celebrations. Some of our friends have been celebrating Diwali (Deepawali) which is one of India’s biggest festivals. The children learned that people light up their houses with Diyas (Diva lamps). Some children had a go at making their own Diyas and others just enjoyed using the clay to make a ‘pot’.

Bonfire night

We have spent some time talking about fires and firework safety. The children have also enjoyed painting firework pictures.

Everything else

We hope you have a lovely weekend.
