Over the next few weeks, Nursery will be learning a lot about Space. We have started this week by sharing the book ‘Aliens Love Underpants’. We discussed the title of the book, who was the author and illustrator and we even started saying some words from the story.
We asked the children if they would like to make something; we all agreed on an alien spaceship. The children shared their ideas – the colour, coloured circles, windows, seats & seat belts, even some lights and underpants!! So the children have started to create their alien spaceship. Towards the end of the week we will be creating something else…
We have also introduced some space ‘small world’ areas that the children are really enjoying. We will be encouraging the children to join with lots of fun space and underpants activities!!
Please make sure you ask a member of staff if you need any help and support with filling out your child’s school application. Remember the deadline is January. If you would like to book a school tour, please contact the North building administrator Diane Walton.
Wrap up warm this week!

Maths and Literacy
The children in Reception have enjoyed playing in the new rocket ship in RH’s classroom and seem to be really enjoying the space and alien topic! Today, we have listened to the story ‘Zig and Zag’ by Pie Corbett and have started to make some alien biscuits. For the rest of this week, the children will be retelling the story of ‘Zig and Zag’ using alien masks and making story maps using pictures and words to move the story on.
In maths, the children will be doing lots of counting down from 20 to 0 and will be working out what one more or one less of a number is up to 20. They have also been thinking about ways to represent numbers, for example drawing 5 circles for the number 5.
Most of the children will be learning the following graphemes:
Some children are learning the grapheme /qu/
and the consonant digraphs
Some children are reviewing and practising the phonemes currently taught /s/ /a/ /t/ /p/ /i/ /n/
Our tricky word this week is go.
Children in Need
It is Children in Need on Friday. The children can come to school in non-uniform and we kindly ask that they bring a contribution of a coin.

This week we are learning about the Hindu and Sikh festival of light – Diwali. Diwali takes place this Wednesday. The festival of light is a way to celebrate the safe arrival of Rama and Sita back to the Kingdom.
As part of our celebrations we will be making our own diva lamps out of clay, making Diwali cards, creating our own mendhi patterns and trying some Diwali sweets. We are continuing to create our own firework pictures using dazzle.
September Reception places
Most people are starting to read letters from the Council regarding applying for Reception places for September 2016. We have posted a useful video clip to guide you through the process. If you need any further help then please do contact us, we are happy to help.
We are running low on spare clothes particularly boys trousers and socks. If we send your child home in a change of clothes please can you bring them back in to school.
Have a great week, wrap up warm!

The Nursery children have had a fantastic week learning all about why we celebrate bonfire night. They enjoyed finding out about Guy Fawkes’ plot to kill King James. We are guessing they enjoyed making and eating their chocolate apples too!
Have a super weekend.

We hope you all had a great week and the children are well rested as we have another busy term ahead!
This week we are learning about why we celebrate Bonfire night- the classroom is full of colourful lights. The children are finding out all about Guy Fawkes’ plot to kill King James by blowing up the Houses of Parliament. We are discussing safety at Bonfire Nights – sparklers and fireworks. The children will be making some Bonfire night food – chocolate apples! They will have to work out how to get the apples covered in chocolate (changing materials).
There will be plenty of art opportunities. We will be making explosive and colourful firework pictures using paint, salt and food colouring, some of which we will be displaying. We are going to show the children how to use the computer programme ‘dazzle’. This is an art programme where we hope the children can create firework pictures using a pencil or paintbrush. Finally we will be exploding our own rockets outside using film canisters, lemon juice and Alka Seltzers tablets.
Individual & Sibling Photographs
Don’t forget THIS Wednesday 4th November are Nursery’s photographs. Individual photos will be taken along with sibling photos.
Poppy bands, stickers or bendy rulers are available to purchase this week. £1 for bands and rulers and a donation of 25p for a sticker. We will be talking about Remembrance Sunday and helping the children to understand what it is for and why we recognise this special day.
Have a super week.
