Another busy week!

This week some of the children have been interested in super heroes so have spent time designing and making masks and other essentials. The children really thought about what they wanted their equipment to look like and talked their ideas through with Mr Catto. The end results were very impressive and surely better than any Batman costume!

In Maths this week we have been talking about height and length. The children have been using language such as tall and short and longest and shortest. They really impressed me by taking the concepts they had learned as a class into the areas of provision. They put all the dinosaurs in order, built tall and short towers and mad long and short lines from lots of different resources. Well done!

Another busy week in Nursery!

February 1, 2018 at 5:12 pm

There have been no monsters this week but the children have still been super busy. In phonics and music, we have been using the tap sticks to tap out syllables in the words avocado, broccoli and tomato. We also sing songs tapping the rhythm with our sticks. The children have listened carefully to the story ‘The 3 Little Pigs’. They joined in with the wolf “Little pig, little pig let me come in” and the pigs “Not by the hair on my chinny, chin, chin”. We talked about the characters and how they felt and recreated some of their expressions ourselves.

In our number work we had to help Charlie pack his case for his holiday. He had a list of things he needed and how many of each. The children had to either read the number or count the objects to work out how many of each item to pack. We have done lots of counting forwards and backwards.

We continue to encourage the children to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ without being prompted and they are trying really hard.

We had another busy stay and read session: it was lovely to see some new faces reading stories to the children. Everyone is welcome and you don’t have to come every week.

The children had a fabulous time at the pyjama party organised by Ayla. She planned the games and food. We enjoyed playing sleeping lions, dancing, pass the parcel and eating pizza!

The children are developing their friendships and it is lovely to watch them playing cooperatively together. We made slime this week that the children loved playing with. Playing with our friends…

Have a fun weekend, wrap up warm.

Shopping in RF

January 26, 2018 at 4:07 pm

8

Last week the children in RF set up their own shop and asked if we could have a proper shop in class. The children had lots of ideas about what kind of shop they would like so we chatted and decided on a toy shop. A small group of children planned what they would need and what would happen in the shop. Lots of children helped to set it up. They found a cash register and some money. They searched around for things to sell in the toy shop and found some shopping bags. We talked about writing shopping lists so the children collected pens and clipboards and we printed lists for the children to write the items they wanted. All week the children have acted out being customers and shop keepers and they have loved writing lists.

The children have been learning how to use tens frames in our class Numeracy sessions. They have used them to recognise how many objects make up a number and how many spaces there are left to make 10. They have used them to add two groups of objects to find out how many they have altogether. All the children were engaged and helped each other if they didn’t have the correct number of objects. Teamwork as well as maths!

Next week in phonics we will be learning four new sounds. The sounds are ai, ee, igh and oa and the tricky word next week will be ‘you’.

Have a great weekend, from the RF team.

Thank you to all the grown-ups who came to our cafe this afternoon. The children have been so excited all week for this event. They were super waiters and waitresses taking orders and serving cold drinks and buns. The children have worked hard this week and I am sure they will enjoy thinking about what we can spend the £64 on!

Thank you for your support.

Monsters in Nursery! (Not real ones)

January 26, 2018 at 1:42 pm

11

Well we have had a super, super busy week in Nursery – the main focus being organising ‘The Monster Café’. The children decided what they needed to do before the café opened today (Friday). They helped decide what was written on the letter to the grown-ups. The menu was created with what they wanted to bake and drinks they would serve; all the menus were decorated by the children. We then did some signs: the children could write directions on how to get to the café or simply tell everyone what they would be selling. We painted a café sign and lots of monsters to decorate our café. The biggest task of all was doing lots and lots of baking!!!! The children have made butterfly buns, chocolate buns, plain buns, gingerbread men and jam doughnuts. I think you will agree that’s a fantastic choice for afternoon tea. We have practised how to greet customers, how to fill out an order form and serve the food/drinks.

As well as the café organisation we also created a pop up opticians. Lots of children had their eyes tested. We also went on a quick trip to India. The children created their own passports – drawing their picture, writing their name and their age. We then checked in and boarded the plane. Seat belts fastened and we took off. Once in India we did some dancing and then tried some Indian snacks.

In our mathematics we continue to count up to 20 and back from 10. The children have sung number songs and counted cotton reels on to pipe cleaners. We are practising our pencil grip when we sign our names. When signing in the children can just write the first letter and gradually build this up. We have been retelling the story of the 3 Little Pigs and encouraging the children to join in with the repeated refrains – “Little Pig, Little Pig let me come in”.

Stay and read was busy this week. Lots of children sat and enjoyed listening to stories from all the grown-ups who came. Stay and Read sessions continue every Wednesday 8.45-9.15 or 12.30-1pm. Please feel free to come another day if your child doesn’t attend Nursery on a Wednesday or if it’s more convenient a different day.

Have a fantastic weekend

Writing, fishing and so much more in RH!

January 25, 2018 at 6:03 pm

We have had a brilliant week in RH. I have been amazed by how much the children have been writing!

Fishing

We have been learning about fishing this week which all stemmed from some children who decided to pretend to go fishing. A child from Year three, who often goes fishing, came to talk to the children about his fishing experiences. The children asked some brilliant questions and found out about what fish eat, where you can fish and what equipment you need.

Some children have been busy making fishing rods:

Phonics

This week we have learnt the phonemes /ai/ /ee/ /igh/. The tricky word this week is ‘was’.

Maths

We have been looking at subtraction this week. The children have completed subtractions practically using counters and have started using a ‘ten frame’ to help with subtractions. The children coloured in an amount of squares (which were taken away form the total of 10) and then had to say how many were left uncoloured.

What else have we been doing?
