Please follow the link for information about phonics and maths this week:
What else have we been doing?
Writing the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’…
The children experimented with tissue paper and paint to see what new colours they could make when mixing different colours.
The children have been pretending to be astronauts in Space! We have learnt a little bit about what it is like in space and spent some time talking about gravity.
Follow the Swallow
For last week’s winter homework, a child had read the story ‘Follow the Swallow’ by Julia Donaldson and talked about why birds migrate in the winter. We have shared this story in class and have made some winter pictures.

This week, we have learnt the tricky word ‘she’.
The phonemes we have learnt are /sh/ and /th/.
The children find it quite tricky to remember that two letters can make one sound. When two letters make a sound, we call it a ‘digraph’ so we remind the children that the two letters make a digraph.
In maths this week, we have been looking at ‘one less’. We have worked out ‘one less’ practically and have also introduced the take away sign so have shown ‘one less’ as taking one away. Here are some fun videos we have watched:
Working out ‘one less’ through songs
Working out ‘one less’ using a number line/track

RH learning this week:
What else have we been doing this week?
This a week, a child in class wanted a ‘Disco rainbow party with chips’. We had a Disco party in PE and seen as we’ve been learning the /ch/ phoneme this week, we made some chips. During this process, we learnt about where chips come from. The children were able to say that they were made from potatoes and we learnt about how potatoes grow and when they’re harvested.

We started the week by learning a new tricky word ‘he’. The children practised saying a sentence which had the word ‘he’ in it. They also practised reading and writing the word.
During the rest of the week we are learning 2 new digraphs qu and ch. The children are beginning to understand that a digraph has 2 letters which make 1 sound.
We have practised reading words and sentences which contain qu and ch digraphs, as well as practising how to form them. Can you see if your child remembers what a digraph is? Do they remember which digraphs they have learnt this week?
We have focused this week’s learning on developing the children’s understanding of the language – ‘more’ and ‘fewer’. To support the children’s understanding we showed them how to use their arms to demonstrate more and fewer.
The children had to work out which groups of objects had more or fewer in them. We then modelled how to put this in to a sentence. “There are more cones in this hoop”. “Woody has fewer sweets than Buzz”. Can you try introducing full sentences when asking your child a question? They find it trickier than you think!
We have also done a lot of work around calculating 1 more than a given number. “If elephant has 5 toys and you give him 1 more. How many will he have altogether?”

Baking, bikes and bubbles! This week lots of our activities seem to have started with the letter ‘b’ which is just coincidence.
We tried a new recipe this week as we have children with allergies to eggs. It involved lots of mixing but was still a success.
At the beginning of the week some of our children had a training session on balance bikes. We were lucky enough to be left with several bikes for the children to practice on. They are becoming much more confident as you can see.
In our finger gym area we have had bubble wrap for the children to develop the muscle strength in the hands. This was very popular and we have run out of bubble wrap so if you have any at home we would be grateful for donations.
Other things this week…
Next week we will be having fun with dough and doing lots of ‘Disco Dough’ activities so ask you child about what they have been doing next week.
Have a good weekend, from the Nursey team.

We couldn’t get through January without having a party in RH!
A few children helped to organise a ‘pyjama and pizza’ party this week. We had a lovely afternoon eating pizza, reading stories, looking at books and retelling stories. We even wrote our own story as a class:
The Three Little Pigs
Once upon a time there were three little pigs. One day, the wolf came. The wolf huffed and puffed and blew the pigs’ house down. The three little pigs got some wood because they needed to build a new house that was stronger. The wolf blew it down again. The three little pigs made a house out of bricks to make it even stronger. The wolf tried to blow it down but it wouldn’t blow down. He huffed and puffed so much that he fell in a pond.
William has also designed a new ‘ice making’ area in the classroom. The children haven enjoyed making ice this week.
This week in maths, we have continued working with numbers 1-10. We have ordered the numbers; looked at the numbers that come before and after the numbers; and we have looked at how to represent the numbers.
Here are some posters we made:
In literacy, we have introduced the tricky word ‘into’. Some children recognised the ‘to’ in the word which helped when trying to read it.
We have also learnt the phonemes /z/ and /zz/.
This week we have introduced a ‘word of the week’. The word this week was ‘rich’. We have talked about the different meanings of the word and tried to use it in a sentence.
Have a great weekend.
