This week has been busy once again with the children demonstrating a varied range of interests.
“I’m going to space” said one boy at the beginning of the week as he sat in a cardboard box. That prompted me to find a copy of the story “Whatever Next!” We collected some resources together, a pair of wellies, a colander, some pretend food and a few other things. Then the children had lots of fun acting out the story.
Some children chose to go to visit our farm. They chatted about the wind turbine, saw the pigs and collected eggs from the chickens.
A group of children were very interested in knights. They wanted to make swords and shields and used the internet to find out information about them. They spent much of the week jousting both inside and outside.
Some other things this week…
Have a good weekend from the Nursery team.

We have had a week filled with learning opportunities!
Phonics and Maths
Please click here for information about our learning this week.
A child brought in a coconut from home. The children were very interested in the coconut so we learnt about how coconuts grow and where they grow. We also cracked into a coconut and had a taste. The children used their senses to describe the coconuts taste, feel and smell. Lots of the children liked the taste!
A child had been awarded a certificate in gymnastics so we have been practising lots of gymnastic routines in class. We also watched some professional gymnastic floor routines.
All this gymnastics lead to a ‘Greatest Showman’ PE lesson.
The Three Little Pigs
The children in RH seem to love the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We have been making story books this week and have been sticking pictures from the story in the correct order. The children have had a go at retelling the story orally using the pictures to support. The children have used some great story language.

This week in Phonics we have learnt the tricky word /we/.
Phonemes learnt this week:
In maths we have introduced the word ‘subtraction’ and have linked this to the terms ‘less’ and ‘fewer’ that we have previously learnt. We have used Numberblocks to help us understand subtraction and have been using songs and rhymes to help us understand the concept of ‘taking way’.
We have also looked at the subtraction sign and have been taking a number of things away practically as well as drawing a number of things and crossing them off.
Thank you for all the donations for the Children’s Heart Surgery fund. The children looked great in their red clothes and the money is going to a good cause.

Wow! What a super busy week we have had in RK. We have covered some many different topics. The word of the week this week was ‘hibernate’. This word was chosen because so many children had used it in their communication books. We found out that tortoises and bears hibernate and come out back out at spring.
We have been writing in our Busy Bee books. Most children have chosen a picture of something they are interested in and used this to create a sentence. The children are working hard to sound out words and remembering to leave finger spaces. We have really been focusing on the children reading some tricky words such as into, to, the, go, no, he, she, we. We would really appreciate it if you could help your child at home with these words.
In maths we have been focusing on subtraction and all the words we associate with it such as take away, fewer, less, minus, subtract. The children have been using objects and writing their take away calculations.
This week the Chinese population have been celebrating Chinese New Year, the year of the pig. The children have listened to the story and watched short clips about how the festival is celebrated. In the classroom, they have been picking up noodles one at a time using chopsticks.
This rest of the week has included looking at and riding in a Porsche, baking, making slime, talking about where meat comes from and bull fighting, making titanic boats, playing number games, Duplo zoos and invisible writing.
Have a great weekend. Last week of this half term next week!

We have had a super week of learning, the children are really focusing on learning new things. They have certainly enjoyed the change in weather. In outdoor play this week we have hunted for spiders webs and found some big webs and some tiny ones. We have talked about the shapes we see, this then led to us finding some icicles on the roof.
Also in outdoor play we have been writing and making marks in the frost. We found out that we could either use our fingers or sticks. The children have also learnt how to play hangman, this is really helping them sounding out and spelling words.
The children have been doing some super work in maths. Last week they looked at the words more and less/fewer, followed by understanding how to calculate 1 less this week. They are beginning to understand that less/fewer means you don’t get as many of something. They have loved learning the one less song (see Reception learning blog).
The last couple of weeks we have learnt how to fix water leaks, all about the titanic, had a PE lesson delivered by Frederike, made animal books, potions, made our own grit and whistles played phonic games and done some dancing/gymnastics…
We are really focusing some of the children’s learning on the pink key words. A lot of children seem a little stuck on this reading level due to the tricky words to learn, tricky because they can’t sound them out. We would really appreciate you playing the caterpillar reading game to support this learning. The pink tricky words are – my, was, we, you, said.
Apologies for all the photos this is due to no blog last week.
Have a super weekend, wrap up warm! See you Monday

Another very busy week in Nursery!
This week the children have enjoyed bathing the babies in our enhanced water area.
We have been doing our ‘Disco Dough’ routines each day and the children are really getting the hang of the exercises.
One of the focus children this week enjoys playing board games at home so we made a simple game together in Nursery. This proved very popular with him and lots of the other children and also encouraged the children to practise their counting skills.
Some children were making pretend smoothies in the Home Corner so Mrs Spencer asked if they would like to make real ones.
We have another new area in Nursery called ‘Bob’s builders’ and the children enjoyed helping to set up the area by writing signs.
Some other things from this week…
Have a lovely weekend from the Nursery team.
