It’s nearly December!

November 30, 2018 at 4:17 pm

The children are getting excited as they worked out today is the last day in November and tomorrow is Christmas!!! (I did explain it was the beginning of December). This week the children have written their letters to Santa and they will be posted tonight so fingers crossed they will get a letter back. They have all done well listening to the initial, middle and final sounds in words. We have talked about a sentence starting with a capital letter, using finger spaces and a full stop at the end.

In phonics we have practised reading j and ss words. Today the children worked in pairs to put a mixed up sentence together recognising where the capital letter was and the full stop.

The rest of the week in pictures…

Christmas concert

The children are working hard to learn their lines and/or the songs. If you’ve been sent a letter regarding providing some of your child’s costume please make sure it is named and it can go in their classroom tray.

Have a great weekend.

Reception Learning

November 30, 2018 at 11:50 am

In phonics, the children have been learning the phonemes /ss/ and /j/.

We have also revised the tricky words that we have learnt: I, to, the, no, go.

We have practised reading these words in a sentence and have spent a long time distinguishing between words that the children can sound out and blend

The children received an exciting video on Monday from Santa.

The children have been busy writing letters and wish lists to Santa.

In maths, we have looked at ‘doubling’. We have learnt the concept of ‘doubling’ and have been learning about scenarios were we’ve had to double a number to find the answer using a ‘doubling machine’. On Thursday, the doubling machine came to school! The children practised putting a piece of Numicon in each side and the doubled number came out of the front.

Christmas Performance

Letters about the children’s roles in the Christmas Performance have been sent out this week. If you’re not sure what part your child is playing, please ask the adults or email Mrs Kumar or Miss Hutchinson.

Abbey House

The children are going to Abbey House during the last week of term. Please ensure you return the reply slips to school/pay on Parent Pay.

Have a good weekend.

Nursery News

November 30, 2018 at 11:49 am

We had quite a different day on Tuesday this week. As you will know we lost all our electricity in the morning. The children were fantastic and carried on as normal. They only realised how dark it was in Nursery when they returned to class after being in the hall to do some singing in the afternoon. We adapted our lunches to involve the children and they all made jam sandwiches. This developed their fine motor skills and gave them practise in using tools.

Stay and Read

We also had our first ‘Stay and Read’ of the year and we got a good response at the beginning of the morning and afternoon sessions. Thank you to all those parents who were able to stay. Don’t worry if you couldn’t stay this week we will be continuing with sessions all year.

Something different in the playdough…

This week we put some cinnamon into our playdough. The children enjoyed mixing it in and watching the dough change to a deep orange colour. Then as they played they were able to experience the warm wintery smell.

Some other things…

Have a lovely weekend from the Nursery team.

RK’s super workers!

November 23, 2018 at 4:24 pm

The children have been working super hard this week! They have been so busy doing lots of writing in the areas of provision and doing lots of maths. As you see below they have been writing for different purposes…

The children have been practising solving addition calculations by putting the largest number int heir head and counting on. They have played domino addition, practised writing numbers and solving their own calculations.

We have also been using the 10 frame to solve addition calculations. The children worked in pairs to count out 2 groups of objects and then find a total by adding all the objects together.

The rest of the week has included building Superhero Lego figures, building models, learning our Christmas concert songs, learning about volcanoes, playing outside, lots of talking about Christmas and when Theo is coming back to school!

Wrap up warm this weekend and we will see you on Monday!

This week in Nursery

November 23, 2018 at 3:42 pm

This week the children have been very busy once more.

We introduced a new ‘Finger Gym’ activity and the children really enjoyed trying to stretch the elastic bands over the nails. This is a good activity to strengthen the muscles in the hand to aid writing.

We have also continued to learn about the number 1. The children have been learning the value of the number and collected 1 object from around Nursery.

We made a giant green collage of the number 1.

And we drew pictures of 1 object.

Other things this week…

Have a lovely weekend from the Nursery team.

Learning in Reception this week

November 22, 2018 at 12:43 pm

This week the children have been trying to recognise all the tricky words they have learnt so far – I, to, no, the, go. We have practised reading them playing the ‘Phase 2 Tricky Word truck game’ in Phonics Play. – There are also lots of other phoneme flashcard games that the children love to play. The children enjoyed seeing if they could beat their time. We have also learnt the ‘l’ phoneme as well as ‘ll’.

The children have tried really hard blending words which start with l like lip, log, lap. It is hard for some children to blend to hear the initial sound of l in words. We looked at words which have ll. We are trying hard to remember that we only say the sound once even though there are 2 ll.

In Maths this week we have continued to learn about the calculation add. The children are becoming more confident adding 2 numbers together to find the total. Ask your child to show you the addition and equals signs using their arms. We have used a ten frame and a dice to make our own calculations. We are continuing to practise putting the biggest number in our head and counting on.

Maths Workshop

We look forward to seeing you all at the workshop at 2.30pm today (Thursday 22nd November) or this evening at 6-6.30pm. If you are unable to attend please let us know and we will go through the areas we discussed.

RK have had a busy week!

November 16, 2018 at 4:25 pm

After a super day in the woods on Monday the children have been very busy. We learnt about the Hindu festival Diwali. Those children who celebrated it told us what they did with their families. We listened to the story of Rama and Sita. The children then coloured mendhi patterns, drew their own mendhi and made Diwali cards

We have also worked hard to understand the words more, less and the same.  Working in pairs the children grabbed a handful of objects and then found the total.

We have also started writing in our ‘Busy Bee’ books. The children were able to write about their favourite part of the trip to Blackhills Wood.

In PE we created ‘Fireworks’. We then used some sensory balls to throw and catch them in teams. The children then worked in pairs to throw coloured scarves and catch them.

Other photos from the week…

Maths Workshop

We are holding a maths workshop next Thursday 22nd November in the North hall at 2.30-3pm and 6-6.30pm. Everyone is welcome. It will help you support your child at home with maths.

Have a great weekend!

Number in Nursery

November 16, 2018 at 3:57 pm

This week the Nursery children have been learning all about the number 1. We read the story of Puppy Number 1 and practised forming the number in the air with our fingers. Then we wrote some numbers using green pens because Puppy Number 1 is green. In the book we came across the word ‘shelter’ so talked about what it meant and found some pictures of different kinds of shelters. In the book Puppy Number 1 sees some puddles which are circle shaped so we tried to make our own circular puddle pictures using marbling inks. All the work is displayed in Nursery. next week we will be finding 1 object around our environment and drawing a picture of 1 thing. If you are out and about this weekend please point out the number 1 to your child.

Other things this week..

Threading to improve fine motor skills

Riding bikes

Having fun with leaves

And finally today Rock Stars

Have a lovely weekend from the Nursery team.

Reception learning this week…

November 15, 2018 at 12:48 pm

In phonics we have learnt the f phoneme and the children also understand that ff still makes one sound. We found out that objects like face, flower, fast start with a f and ff is often found at the end of words like cuff, fluff. It can also be found in the middle of the word c-o-ff-ee. We have sounded out and blended words like fog, frog, fluff and cuff. We are impressed at how well the children have tried forming the grapheme f. There was no tricky word this week due to the school trip.

In our number work we have been learning about the word ‘more’ and finding out which 2 groups of objects have more in. We have then started to look at combining 2 groups together to find the total. Some children have completed addition calculations.
