More science in Reception!

June 30, 2017 at 2:45 pm

Another busy week!

This week the children have made some cress eggheads. They used egg shells, cotton wool, cress seeds and water. Have a look at the pictures below to see what has happened. One child asked if the seeds could grow without soil so we used the internet to find out that the nutrients they need to grow are contained within the seed.

We have also been talking about keeping healthy and in particular looking after our teeth. We did an experiment to see what fizzy drinks do to our teeth. We left eggs soaking in cola overnight and then had a look at them. They had darkened in colour so we used a tooth brush and toothpaste to try to clean them. Ask you child about the results!

Finally today we had the S Factor final. The two finalists from reception confidently carried out their experiments in front of the whole school as well as the very important judges. Have a look at our pictures and also the blog written by Mr Harris. Well done to everyone who took part!

Camping fun!

June 26, 2017 at 6:13 am

On Wednesday the children had a fantastic day camping. The day was organised by Imaan. Both Imaan and Amelia had the idea of a camping day while making play dough marshmallows!

There were are a few things requested: fire, marshmallows, food, tents, chairs, sleeping bags and games. We had lots of tents, chairs and sleeping bags for the children to play in. They had the opportunity to toast marshmallows, followed by a lovely picnic of sandwiches, carrots, cucumber and a bun.

After food we played. We had fun on the space hoppers and finished our day with a game of tug of war! Girls against boys in the afternoon was slightly unfair as we have lots more girls – I wonder who won?!

Bees and Science

June 23, 2017 at 2:13 pm

What another fun week in Reception! On Wednesday Mrs Gilhooley and Mrs Laurie brought some bees out of the hives for the children to see. Everyone was very interested and asked some very good questions. The children wanted to know who did the work in the hive and what happened to the bees in the winter. Ask them to see if they can remember the answers!

Thursday was also exciting as we held our S Factor heats. We were amazed at how many entries there were and the quality of the experiments. All the children who entered were able to describe what they were doing and predict what should happen. They were very knowledgeable. All entrants received a certificate and a sticker. Next Friday all the children will be going to the South hall for the Grand Final. Fingers crossed for the Reception contestants!

Bees Buzzing…

June 22, 2017 at 9:35 am

Yesterday the Nursery children we so lucky to go and visit the school bees. Mrs Laurie and Mrs Gilhooley asked the children what they knew already about bees..
“They sting you”
“They make honey”

The children watched the bees, saw bees coming out of their cells and even a boy bee!

By the end of our visit the children knew…

“Bees collect nectar and pollen from flowers”
“Boy bees are lazy”
“Girl bees are always busy”
“Bees die after they sting you”
“Stay still near a bee and it won’t sting you”
“If you put sugar and water on a spoon it will help a tired bee”

Thank you Mrs Gilhooley and Mrs Laurie the children loved seeing the bees.

PE in Reception

June 16, 2017 at 11:37 am

Today in PE the children have been developing their jogging and kicking skills. We have modelled to the children how to jog correctly, using a slow pace and using their arms for support and power. They have also have been kicking a ball to a partner showing control and have been trying to retrieve the ball with some control as well. This has then progressed to the children setting up mini goals around the border of the playground and they have been taking it in turns to be the ‘striker’ and the ‘goalkeeper’.

St George’s Crypt

June 13, 2017 at 10:19 am

This morning a group of 6 children went to St George’s Crypt in Leeds. We took our donation of food and money. We then got to have a tour inside and we saw where everyone eats and sleeps. They were so impressed with what the children had done and said a “HUGE THANK YOU!”
Well done Nursery.

Pyjama fun in Nursery!

June 8, 2017 at 4:28 pm

On Wednesday the Nursery children had a fantastic day coming to school in their pyjamas! The children developed the idea of raising money for a charity and they did a sterling job. They have collected a large box of tins and raised £30.50 for St George’s Crypt in Leeds. We are so proud of how they have put the needs of others n=before their own. We are organising a small group of children to deliver the food next week.

A big thank you to all the parents who supported this idea, including Mrs Leckenby who came to school in pyjamas – brilliant!

Welcome back

June 8, 2017 at 11:55 am

We have thoroughly enjoyed hearing about all the wonderful experiences the children have endured during the half term holiday. The children have been discussing their highlights with the rest of the class and have also written about them.

This week and next, the adults in Reception have been and will be further assessing the children against the areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage. To view the expected level of development in the areas, please click here: ELG.  All the children have worked incredibly hard so far this year and we are proud of all of their hard work.

In preparation for Year one, the children have started going out to play every morning from 10.30-10.45 with the rest of the Infants (Year one and two children). The children will also be attending Special Mention assemblies on Thursday afternoons. This is a fun reward assembly in which ‘Special Mentions’ are handed out to each class for children who have impressed the adults in Reception.

This week the children have been learning about sun safety and have discussed the different ways to stay safe in the sun. Please ensure the children come to school with a hat and sun cream when it is forecast to be sunny. It seems that the weather has taken a turn for the worse this week but it hasn’t stopped us from playing and learning outside!

We hope you have had a great half term break. We have 7 weeks left of the Nursery year!! Don’t worry the children will have a smooth transition in to Reception. They will be spending time in both of the Reception classes between now and when we break up. They will also receive a transition booklet which will show the children pictures of their classroom, adults and their friends. These booklets are extremely useful in preparing your child coming back in September.

On this night you will get your welcome pack which will include the class your child is in and a start date.
