The children have all settled in extremely well and are really enjoying playing in their new classrooms.

Literacy/Phonics

This week, the children have started to learn single letter sounds. Each day, the children will be read a story which contains the letter sound in the title and will be trying  foods beginning with the letter sounds.

Every day, the children will be completing activities to help them spot the sound, read the sound and form the sound using cursive script. The children will learn an action alongside the sound and will come home with a ‘sound button’ sticker. If you press the button, your child should make the correct phoneme sound.

The sounds this week are:

The video below includes short rhymes to match each letter sound and models how to say the different sounds correctly.

Letter Formation

It is important that the children begin to start forming the letters of the alphabet correctly. The two pictures below show a couple of ways to make practising letter formation fun!

Numeracy

This week, we are focussing on the numbers 1-4. The children will be finding objects to represent the value of each number and will be spotting it in the environment. They will practise saying which number comes before and after the given number, and will also be practising forming them. Similarly to the Literacy, the children will come home with a numbered sticker to share what they have been learning.

The pictures below show pieces of Numicon. Numicon is a resource that we use in school to help the children visualise numbers.

We look forward to another fun-filled week in Reception!
