Welcome back! We have had a very busy week in Nursery as we have been invaded by pirates and by actors and actresses!!
The children got messages from Captain Squiffles who needed a pirate ship as he had lost his. Then Snow White wanted us to make her a theatre to perform on.
The children talked about all the things they needed for a theatre and a pirate ship. The children set about making all the things they asked for.
The most exciting part of the week was getting to use both new role play areas. I think you will agree that are having a lot of fun!

The children have been raring to go again this week after the holidays.
We have a new castle role play area in RH’s classroom which the children have really enjoyed so far this week. They have been coming up with all sorts of ideas to add to the castle. They made a drawbridge, flags, shields, swords and even dragon costumes! As well as a new castle, we also had a special delivery! A large silver egg appeared in a basket. We looked after the egg and came up with ideas about what may be inside it. Eventually the egg hatched and it was a dragon! We realised that the dragon had been very quiet and had lost his roar so the children have been making medicines to help the dragon’s throat. We tried a few of the children’s medicines and finally found one that helped him get his roar back. The children have been writing sentences about what has happened and some children wrote stories.
There has also been an incident this morning with an evil dragon! He came in over night and stole some of Miss Hutchinson’s jewels! The children were shown some pictures of the dragon in the castle and a video from him showing him stealing them.
The children have been searching all day for the dragon and are still yet to find him – they have found lots of clues though like hand prints and scratch marks! They have also been drawing maps to show where they think the treasure has been hidden and have also been making wanted posters.
In maths, we have have been using Numicon all week and trying to become familiar with the value of each piece. We have been ordering the Numicon from 1-10 and further to 20 with some children. We have been practising using Numicon to find doubles and some children have also been adding and subtracting with Numicon.
Most children are learning ure and air this week.
Some children are learning ue, aw and au.
Some children are learning j and v.

On Wednesday we celebrated Chinese New Year. The children came to school dressed in red as this is a lucky colour in China. The children listened to the story of how the Chinese New Year started – a race with lots of animals. Each animal then had a year named after them. This year is the year of the monkey. We read the story ‘Cleversticks’ which is about a Chinese boy who isn’t good at anything until he uses 2 paintbrushes as chopsticks and eats a biscuit. So we thought we would give it a try; the results were interesting – some children even tried eating fruit using chopsticks!
We also made a huge Chinese lion which the children used to dance around the classroom to music. They had to try and bend their knees up and down while moving forward.
We have had a busy but fantastic week!

On Tuesday and Thursday this week the Nursery children learnt about ‘Shrove Tuesday’ better known as Pancake day! The children knew the ingredients they needed and helped to mix the batter. We then got to taste them and find out what our favourite toppings were – 1st syrup, 2nd oranges and sugar and 3rd lemon and sugar. As well as eating the pancakes the children got to have a go at tossing the pancakes, which resulted in lots of laughing! We all then had a go at pancake racing. Here are just a few of the photos we took!

This morning the Nursery children visited their reading buddies in 3S for the first time. Mr Sharp’s class read stories to the children that they had written. They then all enjoyed sharing some picture books. Both classes had a great time.

It’s the last week of this half term and the busiest yet!
On Monday we celebrated Chinese New Year. This year is the Year of the Monkey and the children learned about the naming of the years and how the order was determined. The children acted out the story and then had a Chinese banquet – a stir fry and prawn crackers. Did your child enjoy it? They listened to Chinese music, made lanterns and Chinese dragons.
As if that was not exciting enough, today it is Shrove Tuesday (but most people know it as ‘Pancake Day’). The children made and tossed pancakes. They chose their topping and really enjoyed eating them. In class the children went around their friends asking them which was their favourite topping and recorded it on a tally chart. Some children chose to write about making pancakes and others returned to class and used the playdough to make their own.
In Phonics this week all the children will be revising the sounds they have been learning over the last few weeks. They will be practising writing them and be encouraged to use them in their independent writing.
In Literacy and Maths the children will have opportunities to use different skills in relation to the activities we have been doing. In Maths the children will be using tally sheets and in Literacy they will be writing about Chinese New Year and Pancake Day.
Later in the week the children will be making emergency vehicles to end off our topic on ‘People Who help Us’.
After half term our topic will be all about knights, dragons and castles and we will be having an exciting pyjama story evening (more information soon!).
Have a good half term from The Reception team.

This week we are celebrating 2 special events – Shrove Tuesday and Chinese New Year.
On Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning the children will find out about Shrove Tuesday and make some yummy pancakes. They will help to make the mixture and find out what the most popular topping is by creating a tally chart. There will also be some fun pancake racing in outdoor play.
On Wednesday we are celebrating Chinese New Year. The children can come to school dressed in red. We will listen to the story of how Chinese New Year was created, make Chinese lanterns, taste prawn crackers, make a Chinese dragon to dance under and try eating a digestive biscuit using chopsticks (all will be explained on Friday’s photos!)
In between all that fun we will be observing the children and seeing how well they are doing in their PSE – Personal, Social and Emotional development.
Have a great week and a restful half term.
The Nursery team.

We have all enjoyed listening to the story ‘SUPERTATO’. It’s about a potato superhero who saves the food from the naughty pea!
We talked about what a supermarket was and the kinds of fruit and vegetables we could find there. We took turns to look at the different vegetables and fruit – we held and smelt them and decided which ones we liked or disliked. We then got busy making our own Superveg or Superfruit. We have talked a lot about what food is healthy and unhealthy and had a go at cutting some healthy food out.
Chinese New Year
On Monday 8th February it will be Chinese New Year. Nursery will be celebrating the Chinese New Year on Wednesday 10th, the children can come to school wearing something red. Red is a lucky colour.
We will be celebrating Shrove Tuesday on Tuesday and Thursday. We will see who can make a pancake and catch it in the pan. We might try some pancake racing too!

The children are really enjoying our topic on ‘People who help us’. Last week we had two visitors to talk to the children. The children asked the midwife and occupational therapist lots of interesting questions. Have a look at our photos and ask the children what they can remember. We are continuing this week by talking about looking after our teeth and will be reading a story called “Smile, crocodile, smile”. Yesterday the children started an experiment to find out what fizzy drinks do to our teeth. We put eggs into water and cola and left them overnight. Ask the children what happened to them!
In phonics this week most children will be revising the sounds they have been learning and practising using them in their writing. Miss Hutchinson’s children will be learning ie, ea, e-e, and i-e. Mrs Fulton’s group will be learning ‘ll’ and ‘ss’ as well as revising all the sounds they know. This week’s tricky word is ‘they’.
In numeracy the children will be ordering objects by height, length and size. They will be measuring classroom objects using Duplo bricks after estimating how many bricks will equal the object.
Next week we are planning a creative week so please can you collect cereal boxes etc. for model making.
Have a good week from the Reception team.
